As stated in the schedule, other than literature review, we will begin setting up the system needed during the 2nd and 3rd week of the course.  It will serve as the preparation for you to start working on the assignments and your project on the following weeks.

For a beginner, you can start by following the tutorial provided by Gumstix Wiki.
You are always welcome to share your experience and/or ask questions in our forum.

Setting up USBnet on Gumstix

The objective of this step is to work with Gumstix via USB network instead of the slower serial communication.

HOWTOs

Setting up Dual-boot System

You can work with Gumstix using the serial console or via USBnet on Windows.  However, if you want to update Gumstix flash image or cross-compile a program for Gumstix, you need to install and work in a virtual Linux environment (e.g. VMware or Colinux) on your Windows.  The following links are helpful if you plan to set up a dual-boot system (which is recommended).

Customizing/Updating Gumstix Filesystem

By default, each Gumstix is shipped with the latest kernel version as of its delivery time, with a limited number of packages/applications.  This step provides a guidelines for updating the default filesystem and/or customizing the packages you need (e.g. the packet sniffer, tcpdump) by reflashing the new image on Gumstix.
