Outline

Ad Hoc Networks

This course focuses on the practical aspect of Ad hoc Networks, covering both Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN).  It starts with a introductory lecture on ad hoc networks and later, each group of students acquires in-depth knowledge of a specific research area. Each group will have up to three students, working collaboratively on a carefully selected research project, e.g. an implementation or a simulation of ad hoc networks.  Hence, the course will be consisting of following three phases:

  1. Literature survey
Introduction to wireless networking, hardware, programming, communication protocols.
  2. Practical learning
To gain expertise in wireless communication programming on hardware nodes or network simulation.
  3. Research project
To acquire an in-depth knowledge of a specific research area in wireless networking and implement/simulate an ad hoc network.

The hardware available for wireless sensor network programming consists of MICA2 motes with MTS sensors boards and Scatterweb-ESB/eGate/ECR motes.  On the other hand, for MANET, we use a combination of Linux-based laptops and single board computers, Gumstix, as the mobile nodes of a real world test bed.  In addition, the network simulator, OMNET++, is used for simulation purpose.
